About

Death in the Family is an independent short narrative film that explores how one family comes to terms with the grief that follows the loss of a loved one.

A mother dies of breast cancer leaving her family distraught. Drowning under the pain of loss, the father receives a fateful phone call from an old girlfriend. But the choice he makes to save himself comes at the expense of his two daughters, who quickly realize they are on their own.

I guess you could say this film has been 25 years in the making. Long before pink ribbons and breast cancer runs, when bone marrow treatments were still considered experimental, my mother died of breast cancer at age 45. My sister and I were teenagers. Days after the funeral, my father, a proud Army man, started a relationship with another woman. The compound effect of this was devastating.

Over the years of sharing my family’s story, I have come to learn that our situation was not uncommon. This has inspired me to bring this story to a larger audience.

Victoria Rowell, star of stage, primetime, daytime and feature films, best known for her roles as feisty Drucilla Winters on "The Young and the Restless" and Dr. Amanda Bentley on “Diagnosis Murder,” makes a cameo appearance as the old girlfriend.
